Common issues and services

What to watch on a Rolls-Royce

A Rolls-Royce is engineered so that its owner never has to think about the machinery. Our job is to keep it that way: to find what the car needs before it makes itself felt, and to do the work without fuss.

Since 2003 the cars have been built at Goodwood under BMW Group ownership, and the engineering reflects it. The first Ghost, and the Wraith and Dawn that grew from it, shared their architecture with the BMW 7 Series of the day. The current Phantom, the Cullinan and today's Ghost sit on Rolls-Royce's own aluminum spaceframe. All of them are heavy, air-sprung and full of electronics.

We diagnose with factory-supplied diagnostic software, send you photos and video of what we find, and agree the work with you before it begins. Fender covers go on before anyone leans into the engine bay.

  1. Air suspension

Every modern Rolls-Royce rides on air springs, tuned for the marque's famous 'magic carpet' ride. The springs and their lines age, and the compressor wears as it compensates for small leaks. A car that lists overnight, or a suspension message on the display, should be seen before the compressor gives up.

  2. Weight: brakes, tires and bushings

These are among the heaviest passenger cars on the road, and the Cullinan is heavier still. Brake pads and rotors, tires and suspension bushings all carry that mass and wear accordingly. Uneven tire wear or a faint knock over expansion joints is often the first sign that a bushing has had enough.

  3. Control modules and standby drain

A modern Rolls-Royce runs dozens of control modules, many of which stay partly awake after the car is locked. Park it for a few weeks without a conditioner and the battery sinks, taking the electronics with it: odd messages, a reluctant start, or doors that misbehave. The fix is often a battery and a clean bill of health, found by testing, not guessing.

  4. Coach doors and power closing

The rear-hinged coach doors and power door closing on the Phantom, Ghost, Wraith, Dawn and Cullinan depend on latches, motors and sensors that must all agree. A door that will not pull itself shut, or closes unevenly, is often a latch, a sensor or an adjustment rather than a major repair.

  5. The V12

The twin-turbo V12s are understressed and durable when serviced on time: oil, spark plugs, ignition coils and coolant are the regular items. The 6.6-liter V12 in the Ghost, Wraith and Dawn is closely related to BMW's N74; the 6.75-liter engine in the current Phantom and Cullinan is its larger sibling.

  6. Paint and finish

Rolls-Royce paint is applied in several layers and polished by hand, and the long, flat panels show every chip and swirl. Paint protection film on the leading edges, or the whole car, with a ceramic coating over it, keeps the finish as it left Goodwood.

Rolls-Royce questions

Will you service a Rolls-Royce outside the dealer network?

Yes. Scheduled maintenance can be carried out independently without affecting the factory warranty, as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects that choice when the work follows the schedule. We use genuine Rolls-Royce parts, and every visit is documented.

Recalls and repairs under the factory warranty are carried out, free, by a Rolls-Royce dealer.

Is a Rolls-Royce Ghost related to the BMW 7 Series?

The first Ghost, launched in 2009, shared its basic architecture and V12 with the BMW 7 Series of that time, reworked extensively by Rolls-Royce. The Wraith and Dawn grew from it. The second-generation Ghost of 2020 moved to Rolls-Royce's own aluminum Architecture of Luxury, shared with the Phantom and Cullinan.

My Rolls-Royce shows a suspension warning. Is it safe to drive?

If the car is sitting level, it can usually be driven gently to us. If a corner has dropped noticeably, do not drive it far: the compressor will run continuously and the tire or bodywork can rub. Call us and we will advise on the best way to bring it in.

Can I drop my car off after hours?

Yes. The secure key box lets you leave the car and keys at any hour, day or night, and collect it the same way. It is also the most discreet way to visit. The Visit page walks through the steps.

Should I fit paint protection film to a Rolls-Royce?

On a car with paint this deep, it is worth considering from the start. Film on the front end stops the stone chips that highway driving brings; full-body film protects every panel. The protection quote gives you a starting range for your car.

How should I store a Rolls-Royce that is not driven often?

Keep it on a battery conditioner whenever it is parked for more than a week or two, keep the tires at the recommended pressure, and drive it long enough to reach full temperature every few weeks. Fluids still age on the calendar, so the service schedule applies even at low mileage.
