What to watch on a Aston Martin

Aston Martin builds grand tourers first: long-legged, beautifully finished and meant to be used. Two eras matter to an owner. The VH-platform cars, from the 2004 DB9 to the V8 and V12 Vantage, the first DBS and the Rapide, share a bonded aluminum structure and Aston's own V8 and V12 engines.

The current generation, from the DB11 of 2016 onward, brought a new structure, Mercedes-AMG's 4.0 twin-turbo V8 in the V8 models, and Mercedes-derived electronics and infotainment. Aston's own twin-turbo V12 remains in the V12 cars, including the DBS.

  1. Sportshift clutch wear on the V8 Vantage

    Many V8 Vantages have Sportshift, an automated single-clutch manual. Like any clutch it wears, faster in traffic and on hills. Wear can be measured with diagnostic equipment, which turns a clutch replacement from a surprise into a planned visit.

  2. Ignition coils on the naturally aspirated V12

    The 5.9-liter V12 in the DB9, the first DBS and the V12 Vantage is known for ignition coil failures, which show as a misfire and a flashing check-engine light. Coils and spark plugs are routine items on these engines, but reaching them takes time, so it pays to do them together.

  3. Suspension on the older VH cars

    The earliest VH cars are now more than twenty years old, and rubber bushings, top mounts and dampers age regardless of mileage. Knocks over bumps, a vague front end or wandering at highway speed are the usual signs. Fresh bushings restore the precision the chassis was known for.

  4. Batteries that go flat in the garage

    Aston Martins have a reputation for flattening their batteries when parked for long spells. A battery conditioner is the cure, and it matters: a weak battery brings a scatter of electrical complaints that often disappear once it is replaced.

  5. The AMG V8 in current models

    The 4.0 twin-turbo V8 in the Vantage, the DB11 V8 and the DBX is a Mercedes-AMG engine supplied to Aston Martin. Its maintenance, parts and diagnostics are widely understood, which makes it the more straightforward of the two families to look after.

  6. Paint on the long hood

    An Aston's long hood and wide front fenders take the brunt of stone chips on the highway. Paint protection film across the full front keeps the finish; matte film suits owners who prefer a satin look.

Can you service a DB11, Vantage or DBX with the AMG V8?

Yes. The engine is a Mercedes-AMG design, and its electronics are Mercedes-derived, so the diagnostic approach is familiar. Aston Martin-specific systems and parts are handled to the factory schedule, and every visit comes with a photo and video report.

How long does a Sportshift clutch last?

It depends on how the car is driven. Traffic, hill starts and slow maneuvering wear it fastest; open-road driving barely touches it. Because wear can be measured, you can plan the replacement rather than wait for it.

Is a V12 Aston Martin expensive to maintain?

More than a V8, mainly because there are more parts and they take longer to reach. Servicing on time and fixing small faults early is the best way to keep costs reasonable. Tell us the car and its history, and we will tell you what to expect over the next year.

Why does my Aston Martin's battery keep going flat?

The electronics draw a small current even when the car is locked, and over a few weeks that flattens the battery. A conditioner solves it. If the battery drains within days, there may be a module staying awake, and that is worth diagnosing.

Will independent servicing affect my Aston Martin warranty?

Not on its own. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects your right to have routine maintenance done by an independent shop, provided it follows the schedule and uses suitable parts. Warranty repairs and recalls are carried out, free, by an Aston Martin dealer.

Should I put paint protection film on my Aston Martin?
