Common issues and services

What to watch on a Ferrari

A Ferrari is serviced to its calendar as much as its odometer. Most are driven sparingly, and time is harder on them than miles: belts, fluids, rubber and batteries age whether the car leaves the garage or not.

The generations are distinct. The 360 and F430 offered the F1 automated single-clutch gearbox. From the California and the 458 Italia onward, Ferrari moved to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and the cars became markedly easier to live with.

Newer Ferraris sold with the factory's seven-year maintenance program may have their scheduled services covered by Ferrari. We are straightforward about that: use it. We look after what it does not cover, and the cars that have aged out of it.

  1. Cam belts on older V8s

The V8s in the 355 and 360 drive their camshafts with rubber belts, which Ferrari replaces on time as well as mileage. On the 355, the major service has traditionally meant lowering the engine out of the car; the 360's belts can be done with the engine in place. The F430 and later V8s use chains instead.

  2. F1 gearbox clutch and hydraulics

Cars with the F1 gearbox, such as the 360 and F430, use a single clutch operated by a hydraulic pump and accumulator. Clutch wear can be read with diagnostic equipment and is worth tracking over time. A pump that runs constantly or a slow, hesitant shift deserves a look before it leaves the car stranded.

  3. Sticky switches and interior trim

On many 2000s Ferraris, the soft-touch coating on buttons, vents and consoles breaks down in heat and turns sticky. It is cosmetic, but it is the first thing a buyer notices, and a Texas summer speeds it along. Affected parts can be refinished rather than replaced.

  4. Carbon-ceramic brakes

Many Ferraris from the F430 onward were offered with carbon-ceramic brakes, and later models fitted them as standard. They last a long time in road use but are costly to replace, so pads should be changed before they wear far enough to harm the rotors.

  5. Nose lift and low front ends

The optional nose-lift system raises the front for ramps and steep driveways. Use it every time: the splitter and the underside of the front bumper are the first things to touch, and they are expensive to put right. A lift that has become slow or will not hold should be checked.

  6. Time-based service and battery care

A Ferrari that stands for weeks drains its battery, and low voltage triggers a string of warnings that can look alarming. Keep it on a conditioner. Brake fluid and coolant are replaced on time whether or not the car has moved, and rubber hoses and belts age on the calendar.

I recently brought my Ferrari 488 Spider in for service due to a check engine light, which I suspected was caused by a misfire.

From start to finish, the experience was exceptional. The staff was highly professional, transparent, and treated my vehicle with the utmost care and attention, as if it were their own. There were no delays or unexpected surprises just honest , straightforward service. …

Ferrari questions

My Ferrari is still covered by the seven-year maintenance program. Should I come to you?

For the scheduled services the program covers, use it: the factory pays. Come to us for everything it does not cover, such as tires, paint protection film, window tint, and repairs outside warranty, and once the program ends, for the scheduled services themselves.

Does a Ferrari 360 need an engine-out service?

No. The 360's cam belts can be replaced with the engine in the car, though it is still a big job. The engine-out major service is associated with earlier V8s such as the 348 and 355. The F430 and later V8s have timing chains and no belt service at all.

How often should the cam belts be changed on an older Ferrari?

Ferrari's schedule sets it by time as well as mileage, so on a low-mileage car the calendar decides, every few years. The service book or invoices tell us when it was last done; if there is no record, assume it is due.

Should I protect my Ferrari's paint with film?

Yes, if the car is driven. Stone chips on a Ferrari nose are almost inevitable on North Texas highways, and respraying original paint affects value. A full front, covering bumper, hood, fenders and mirrors, is the usual starting point. The protection quote gives you a starting range for your car.

Do you inspect used Ferraris before purchase?

Yes. A pre-purchase inspection on a Ferrari should cover the service history against the schedule, when the belts were last done where the car has them, clutch wear on F1 cars, the fault memory, and signs of paint or accident repair. Tell us the model and year and we will tell you what we check.

Does independent servicing affect my Ferrari's factory warranty?

Routine maintenance done to the schedule with suitable parts cannot, on its own, void the warranty; the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects your choice of shop. Warranty repairs and recalls are done by a Ferrari dealer, at no cost to you.
