What to watch on a Audi
Modern Audis are dense machines. Turbocharged direct-injection engines, dual-clutch and automatic gearboxes, quattro drive and a network of control modules all have to agree before the car feels right.
That makes diagnosis the real job. A warning on an Audi is rarely one part; it is a symptom read across several systems. We start with a full scan using factory-supplied diagnostic software, and you receive photos and video of what we find.
From an oil change on an R8 to cooling work on a Q5, the repair follows Audi's procedures and uses OEM or premium aftermarket parts and fluids.
Timing chain tensioner on early 2.0 TFSI engines
Some 2.0 TFSI engines built from roughly 2008 to 2012 used a chain tensioner that could fail and let the chain skip a tooth, with serious consequences. Audi revised the part. A rattle for a few seconds after a cold start is worth investigating, and on a car of that age it is worth confirming which tensioner is fitted.
Oil consumption on some 2.0 TFSI engines
Several 2.0 TFSI engines of the same era became known for burning oil, traced mainly to the piston rings. Check the dipstick or the level in the MMI between services rather than relying on the service visit, and tell us how much you are adding. A failing crankcase breather can make consumption look worse than it is.
Carbon on the intake valves
Direct injection sprays fuel straight into the cylinder, so nothing washes the back of the intake valves. On FSI and earlier TFSI engines, carbon builds up and brings rough idle, hesitation and misfires. Walnut blasting removes it without harming the valves. Many later Audi engines add port injectors partly to prevent the build-up.
Water pump and thermostat housing leaks
Many Audi engines use a plastic water pump or thermostat housing that cracks or seeps after years of heat cycles. A faint coolant smell, a low-coolant message or pink crust around the housing are the clues. North Texas summers are hard on cooling systems, so it is worth checking at every service.
PCV valve and oil separator
The positive crankcase ventilation valve and oil separator fail often enough on TFSI engines to be a routine item. A whistle at idle, lean-running fault codes, a rough idle or a new oil leak from a seal pressured by the crankcase all point to it. It is a modest repair when caught early.
S tronic and quattro servicing
S tronic dual-clutch gearboxes have their own fluid and filter service, and Audi sets the interval by gearbox. Transverse-engine quattro models such as the A3, TT and Q3 use a Haldex-type rear coupling with its own fluid, which is easy to forget. Missed fluid services can contribute to harsh or hesitant shifts.

Audi questions
Does my Audi's scheduled maintenance have to be done at the dealer?
No. Federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) stops a manufacturer refusing warranty cover just because maintenance was done elsewhere, as long as it follows the schedule and uses suitable parts. We follow Audi's schedule and document each visit so your records stay complete.
Recalls and warranty repairs are still carried out, at no cost, by an Audi dealer.
My Audi uses oil between services. Is that normal?
Audi treats some oil consumption as normal. If you are topping up regularly between services, it is worth measuring. On the 2.0 TFSI of around 2009 to 2011, heavy consumption usually traces back to the piston rings; a faulty PCV system is the other common cause. We can measure it properly and tell you which you are dealing with.
What does a flashing check-engine light mean on an Audi?
A flashing light means a misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration and have it looked at soon. On Audis the usual causes are an ignition coil, worn spark plugs or carbon on the intake valves, and the fault memory narrows it down quickly.
How often should the S tronic fluid be changed?
Audi sets the interval by gearbox. On many models with the wet-clutch S tronic it is a fixed mileage, commonly 40,000 miles, and it includes the filter. Your service record or the car's own schedule gives the figure for yours; we will confirm it when you book.
Can you calibrate Audi driver-assistance cameras after windshield or bumper work?
Yes. Lane assist, adaptive cruise and the parking systems rely on cameras and radar that need calibrating after a windshield replacement, a wheel alignment or front-end repair. ADAS calibration is one of our services, so it can follow the repair in the same visit.
Do you service the R8 and the RS models?
Yes. An oil service on an R8 or an RS model follows the same process as one on an A4: a full scan, a photo report, and work agreed with you before it starts.
