What to watch on a Maserati
Maserati pairs Italian style with engines that, for two decades, came from Maranello. The 4.2 and 4.7-liter V8s in the GranTurismo and the fifth-generation Quattroporte were built by Ferrari, and so was the 3.0 twin-turbo V6 in the Ghibli, the Levante and the later Quattroporte.
That heritage is a pleasure to drive and asks for some care in return: correct fluids, service on time, and attention to the electrical systems, which is where many Maserati faults begin.

Cam variator rattle on the V8
The 4.2 and 4.7 V8s use cam variators, or phasers, that can wear and produce a clatter for a few seconds after a cold start, sometimes with cam timing fault codes. It is a known trait of these engines and worth listening for on any car you are thinking of buying; the car needs to be truly cold to hear it.
DuoSelect and Cambiocorsa clutches
The 4200 Coupé and Spyder and the early fifth-generation Quattroporte use Cambiocorsa or DuoSelect, automated single-clutch gearboxes. Clutch wear can be measured, and the hydraulic pump and actuator need attention with age. From 2007 the Quattroporte offered a conventional ZF automatic, as do most GranTurismos.
Electrical faults, grounds and batteries
Many Maserati warnings trace back to battery voltage, a poor ground or a corroded connector rather than to the component the dash names. A battery that goes flat overnight points to a parasitic drain. Diagnosis starts with the power supply before any part is condemned.
Care for the twin-turbo V6
The Ferrari-built 3.0 twin-turbo V6 is strong, but its turbochargers depend on clean oil changed on time. Oil seeping from turbo lines, smoke on start-up or a sudden loss of boost should be looked at promptly, before a small leak becomes a turbo replacement.
Air suspension on the Levante
The Levante rides on air suspension with adjustable height. As with any air system, the springs and lines age and the compressor wears as it compensates. A corner that sits low after the car has stood overnight is the tell, and fixing the leak early saves the compressor.
Soft-touch interior coatings
Like other Italian cars of the same era, many 2000s Maseratis have a soft-touch finish on switches and panels that breaks down in heat and turns tacky. It does not affect how the car drives, but it affects how it feels and what it is worth. The parts can be refinished.

Maserati questions
Is my Maserati's engine really built by Ferrari?
If it is a GranTurismo, a fifth-generation Quattroporte, or a Ghibli, Levante or sixth-generation Quattroporte with the 3.0 V6, yes: those engines were built by Ferrari in Maranello. The MC20's Nettuno V6 is Maserati's own design.
What is the rattle when my GranTurismo starts from cold?
Most often the cam variators. The noise lasts a few seconds after a cold start and fades once oil pressure builds. It does not always need immediate repair, but it should be diagnosed, because worn variators can eventually upset cam timing.
My Ghibli shows several warnings at once. What should be checked first?
The battery and charging system. Low voltage causes modules across the car to log faults at the same moment, and the dash fills with warnings that have one cause. We test the supply first, then read each module's fault memory.
Does independent servicing affect my Maserati warranty?
No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Maserati cannot deny warranty coverage only because maintenance was done by an independent shop, provided it follows the schedule with suitable parts. Recalls and warranty repairs are done by a Maserati dealer, free.
How often should a Maserati be serviced?
Maserati sets the schedule by model and year, typically once a year or at a set mileage, whichever comes first. Low-mileage cars still need their fluids changed on time. The service indicator and the car's history tell us where yours stands.
Can you check a used Maserati before I buy it?
Yes. On a V8 car we listen for variator noise from a genuinely cold start, check clutch wear on Cambiocorsa and DuoSelect cars, scan every module, and check the service history against the schedule. It is the cheapest way to avoid an expensive mistake.
