What to watch on a McLaren

Every McLaren road car since the 12C of 2011 is built around a carbon-fiber tub. Most pair it with a twin-turbo V8 behind the cabin and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox; the Artura moved to a V6 hybrid. The engineering is Formula 1 in spirit and in detail, and it rewards an owner who keeps up with it.

Most McLarens are driven sparingly and stored carefully, so their needs are set by time as much as mileage: fluids, batteries, tires and software. The cars are low, wide and cooled by radiators on each side of the engine, which brings its own habits.

  1. Side radiators and road debris

    The radiators sit on each side of the engine, fed by the intakes behind the doors. Leaves, grit and road debris collect in front of them and cut airflow, which matters in a Texas summer. Clearing them is simple, inexpensive maintenance, and it protects the cooling system from the heat that shortens its life.

  2. Hydraulic suspension on the 12C, 650S and 720S

    ProActive Chassis Control replaces conventional anti-roll bars with interlinked hydraulic dampers and accumulators. It is a clever system, and like any hydraulic system its accumulators, lines and seals age. Warnings, a harsh or floaty ride, or a car that sits unevenly are the signs. The 570S and its Sports Series siblings use conventional anti-roll bars.

  3. Dihedral doors, struts and window drop

    The doors are held open by gas struts that weaken with age, and on the frameless doors the windows drop slightly as the door opens and rise as it closes. A door that sinks when opened, or a window that no longer seals cleanly, is a known age-related fault and usually a modest repair.

  4. Software on early cars

    Early 12Cs received a series of factory software updates for the engine, gearbox and infotainment. A car that has missed them can shift roughly or behave oddly. McLaren's updates are distributed through its retailer network, so when an update is the answer we will tell you, rather than chase the symptom.

  5. Battery voltage in storage

    McLarens are sensitive to battery voltage, and a car left standing without a conditioner can refuse to start or throw up a list of warnings. Connecting a conditioner every time the car is parked for more than a few days avoids most of it.

  6. Body panels and stone chips

    The carbon tub is extremely stiff and rarely needs attention, but the body panels around it chip and scuff like any other. The front bumper and hood take most of the stone damage, and repainting them is costly. Paint protection film prevents most of it.

Can an independent shop service a McLaren?

Yes, for maintenance and most repairs. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act means McLaren cannot refuse warranty cover simply because an independent shop carried out scheduled maintenance with suitable parts. Software updates, recalls and warranty repairs remain with a McLaren retailer.

What is McLaren's ProActive Chassis Control?

It is a hydraulic suspension system that links the dampers so the car can stay flat in corners without conventional anti-roll bars, yet ride comfortably on rough roads. It appears on the 12C, 650S and 720S families. Its accumulators and seals are wear items as the car ages.

Why do McLaren radiators need cleaning?

Because they sit behind the side intakes, low and close to the road, where debris gathers. A partly blocked radiator runs hotter, and heat is hard on hoses, seals and the engine itself. Checking and clearing them is part of looking after the car properly.

How much is paint protection film on a McLaren 720S in Plano?
