Common issues and services

What to watch on a Bentley

A Bentley is built to cover great distances quickly and quietly, and it carries a lot of weight while it does. That shapes almost everything about how it should be maintained: brakes, suspension and tires all work harder than they would on a lighter car.

Beneath the craftsmanship, the modern Bentley shares its engineering with the wider Volkswagen Group. The W12 and the 4.0 twin-turbo V8 are dense, capable engines, and many jobs on them begin with carefully removing trim and ancillary parts to reach the problem. Doing that well, and putting everything back as it was, is most of the skill.

We diagnose with factory-supplied diagnostic software, send you photos and video of what we find, and agree the work with you before it begins. The team brings more than 60 years of combined experience with European cars, and keeps training as the cars change. Consider us the dealership alternative that keeps your Bentley close to home.

  1. Air suspension on the Continental GT and Flying Spur

The Continental GT and Flying Spur ride on air springs with adaptive damping. With age, the springs and their lines leak and the compressor wears from topping them up. A car that settles low after standing, or a suspension warning on the dash, needs attention before the compressor burns itself out trying to keep up.

  2. Coolant hoses and pipes on the W12

The twin-turbo W12 packs twelve cylinders into a compact engine bay with a great many coolant hoses and pipes, some of them plastic. Seeping joints are a known age-related item and often hide under covers. A low-coolant warning, or a sweet smell after a drive, is the cue to pressure-test the system.

  3. Brakes, rotors and tires

A Continental GT weighs well over two tons and can travel at very high speed. Pads and rotors wear faster than many owners expect, especially the large iron rotors. Carbon-ceramic brakes were offered on many models; they last far longer but cost far more to replace, so pad changes should never be left late.

  4. Front suspension arms and bushings

Heavy cars are hard on rubber. The front control arm bushings on the Continental and Flying Spur wear and bring knocks over bumps, vague steering or uneven tire wear. Replacing arms in pairs keeps the car tracking straight and the steering as precise as it left Crewe.

  5. Battery voltage and electronics

Bentley's electrical systems are sensitive to battery voltage. A car that spends weeks between drives belongs on a battery conditioner; a weak battery can bring on warnings that look far more serious than they are, and in some cases stop the car from starting at all.

  6. Transmission service

Earlier Continental and Flying Spur models use a ZF automatic; the third-generation Continental GT from 2018 moved to an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Either should have its fluid serviced when the schedule calls for it, and harsh or slow shifts on an older car can often be traced to old fluid or gearbox adaptations.

Bentley questions

Can you service a Bentley without it going to the dealer?

Yes. Routine maintenance on a Bentley can be done by an independent shop without affecting the warranty; the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects that choice when the work follows the schedule and uses suitable parts. We use authentic parts and document each visit.

Warranty repairs and recalls remain the dealer's job, at no cost to you.

Is the Bentley W12 related to Volkswagen and Audi engines?

Yes. The W12 is a Volkswagen Group design that also appeared, without turbochargers, in the Audi A8 and the Volkswagen Phaeton and Touareg. Bentley's twin-turbo version is its own specification, but the shared family means its engineering is well documented. Bentley ended W12 production in 2024.

My Continental GT sits low in the morning. What is wrong?

An air leak, most likely at one of the air springs or its line. The longer it goes on, the harder the compressor works, and a compressor that has been overworked is the expensive part. Note which corner drops, book it in, and we will find the leak and show you what we found.

How long do the brakes last on a Bentley?

There is no honest single figure: it depends on the model, the brakes fitted and how the car is driven. Heavy cars that are driven briskly go through pads and rotors quickly. An inspection measures pads and rotors and tells you how much life is left, so you can plan the job.

What maintenance does a Bentley need?

Bentley sets the schedule by time and mileage: oil and filters, inspections, brake fluid at a fixed interval, and spark plugs and gearbox service at longer ones. Because most Bentleys cover few miles, time usually sets the pace. We follow the factory schedule and tell you what the next visit will involve.

Do you protect Bentley paint?

Yes. Bentley paint is deep and the large panels show every chip. Paint protection film on the nose, hood and front fenders, or the whole car, stops most stone damage; a ceramic coating over it makes washing easier. The protection quote gives a starting range for your car.
