What to watch on a Land Rover Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport arrived in 2005 as a shorter, sharper sibling to the full-size Range Rover. The first generation (2005–2013) shared its structure with the Discovery 3, the second (2013–2022) moved to a lightweight aluminum body, and the third (2022–present) is built on the MLA-Flex platform.
The engines
- First generation: a 4.4 V8 and a 4.2 supercharged V8, then the 5.0 V8 from 2010.
- Second generation: the 3.0 supercharged V6 and 5.0 supercharged V8, later Ingenium six-cylinder engines and a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid.
- Third generation: Ingenium six-cylinder mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids and a BMW-sourced 4.4 twin-turbo V8.
Nearly every US-market Range Rover Sport rides on air suspension, and most of what an owner needs to know follows from that.
Air suspension on every generation
Air springs, the valve block and the compressor are the wear items. A corner that drops overnight, a compressor that runs for a long time, or a suspension fault that limits speed are the signs. A leak found early costs far less than a burnt-out compressor.
5.0 V8 cooling and timing chains
The 5.0 supercharged V8 from 2010 is known for coolant leaks from its water pump and plastic pipes, and some early engines for worn timing chain tensioners and guides. A rattle at start-up, or coolant that needs regular topping up, deserves attention.
3.0 supercharged V6 coolant leaks
The 3.0 supercharged V6 in second-generation cars can leak coolant from its water pump and hoses, often out of sight under the supercharger. A sweet smell after parking or a coolant warning are worth tracing before the engine overheats.
Battery and electrical faults
A weak battery or a module that stays awake after locking causes a spread of warnings across the cluster. Battery and charging tests come first, before any individual fault is chased.

Drive gently and not far: the system limits speed because it cannot hold the car at the right height. The cause is usually an air leak or a compressor that has given up. We will find it and show you photos before ordering parts.
Is the Range Rover Sport the same as the Range Rover underneath?
Not quite. The first generation shared its structure with the Discovery 3; later generations share more with the full-size Range Rover, but the Sport is shorter and set up for sharper handling. Many engines and systems are common to both, which keeps parts and procedures familiar.
Can you inspect a used Range Rover Sport before I buy?
Yes. The inspection should cover the air suspension at every height, the cooling system under pressure, the fault memory of every module, and the service history. On a 5.0 V8, a cold start tells you a good deal about the timing chains.
How often does a Range Rover Sport need service?
