What to watch on a Lamborghini Urus

The Urus arrived in 2018 as Lamborghini's super-SUV: a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, an eight-speed automatic, all-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering and adaptive air suspension. It later became the Urus S and the Performante, and the Urus SE added plug-in hybrid power.

Beneath the bodywork it shares the Volkswagen Group's MLB Evo platform with the Audi RS Q8, the Porsche Cayenne and the Bentley Bentayga. That shared foundation keeps parts and procedures well documented, and it puts an experienced Volkswagen Group technician on familiar ground.

What it asks of an owner

Weight and performance are the story. The Urus is heavy and very fast, so brakes and tires wear quickly, and its carbon-ceramic brakes are costly to replace. The front end is wide and low for an SUV, and it collects stone chips on the tollway.

  1. Carbon-ceramic brakes

    The Urus comes with carbon-ceramic brakes. They resist fade and last a long time in normal driving, but the rotors are very expensive, so pads must be replaced before they wear through. Brake inspections should measure pad thickness properly rather than glance through the wheel.

  2. Air suspension

    Adaptive air suspension lets the Urus lower on the highway and rise for rough ground. As cars age, air springs, lines and the compressor become wear items. A car that sits unevenly after standing, or a suspension warning, is the early sign.

  3. Tires and alignment

    Large-diameter wheels, a heavy body and rear-wheel steering make alignment important. A pothole or curb strike can knock it out and wear expensive tires unevenly within a few thousand miles. Check the inner edges of the front tires regularly.

  4. Heat and the twin-turbo V8

    The 4.0 V8 carries its turbochargers inside the V of the engine, which concentrates heat. Oil quality and change intervals matter, and so does the cooling system in a Texas summer. Oil seeping around the turbo lines deserves attention early.
