Transmission slip is a common problem in Audis. It happens when the transmission fails to engage properly: there is a delay, or a slipping sensation, as you drive. Caught early, the cause is often simple. Left alone, it rarely stays that way.
What causes it
Three causes account for most cases.
- The wrong fluid. Transmission fluid lubricates the gears. The wrong type lubricates poorly, which raises friction and leads to slipping. Use the fluid type Audi specifies for your car.
- Low fluid. Low levels cause overheating and faster wear on components. Checking and maintaining the level prevents most of this.
- Worn gears. Over time the gears inside the transmission wear down, and performance drops. Deal with it promptly to prevent further damage.
The signs
- Slow acceleration. The car hesitates, or lacks power when you press the pedal.
- Revs without speed. Engine RPM rises with no matching rise in road speed. That also costs fuel and strains the engine.
- New noises. Grinding or whining when you shift or drive.
