Oil leaks
Oil leaks are among the most frequent issues. The usual causes are worn gaskets, worn seals or a damaged oil pan. A leak does more than stain the driveway: it lowers the oil level, and low oil damages engines.
Watch for:
- oil spots under the car
- a burning smell while driving
A small leak is easy to overlook. It is also far cheaper to fix now than later.
Coolant leaks
Coolant leaks usually come from a damaged radiator, water pump or hose. Left untreated, they lead to overheating, and overheating can cause severe engine damage.
Watch for:
- puddles of bright green or orange fluid under the vehicle
- a sweet smell from the engine
Timing chain or belt wear
The timing chain or belt keeps the engine's valves opening and closing at the right intervals. When it fails, the result ranges from poor running to catastrophic engine failure.
Watch for:
- unusual engine noises
- misfires
- difficulty starting
